Gavi DOCG 'Pilin' Pilin

Region: Piedmont
Producer: Castellari Bergaglio
Vintage: 2000
Grapes: Cortese di Gavi 100%
Alcohol Vol.: 13%
Type of wine: Dry Still
Bottle: 750 ml
Bottles in case: 6 bottles
Yearly production: -
To US market: -
Comments: This wine is called 'Pilin' to honor the grandfather of the current family estate manager, Marco, as this was the nickname by which he was known in Gavi.

The best, healthiest and ripest bunches are carefully selected from all the farm’s vineyards and placed in wooden trays, where they are left to partially dry for 30 to 40 days. This makes the wine suitable for vinification and ageing in barriques.

It reaches maturity in its third year, and maintains an even level of quality for many years. The winery began making this wine back in 1984, since then its quality has stood out for itself.

Gavi DOCG di Gavi 'Rolona' Gavi Rolona

Region: Piedmont
Producer: Castellari Bergaglio
Vintage: 2005
Grapes: Cortese di Gavi 100%
Alcohol Vol.: 12.5%
Type of wine: Dry Still
Bottle: 750 ml
Bottles in case: 6 bottles
Yearly production: -
To US market: -
Comments: The different compositions of the soil compared to the Gavi 'Fornaci', the age of the vines, types of clones, planting density and microclimate make this wine very different from the previous one. Comparative tasting clearly demonstrates how much terroir and vineyard work affects the wine.

Though the wine is very pleasant the summer after the harvest, it gets even better after a few months of refinement in the bottle, where it can be kept for several years without quality loss.

Gavi DOCG di Gavi 'Rovereto-VignaVecchia' Gavi Rovereto

Region: Piedmont
Producer: Castellari Bergaglio
Vintage: 2006
Grapes: Cortese di Gavi 100%
Alcohol Vol.: 13%
Type of wine: Dry Still
Bottle: 750 ml
Bottles in case: 6 bottles
Yearly production: -
To US market: -
Comments: Despite high production costs and low yield, this wine is produced from an over 80-year-old vineyard with outstanding traditional and genetic heritage. In addition, the particular soil composition and the vineyard's microclimate created by the surrounding woodlands, give this Gavi 'Vignavecchia' (Old Vineyard) very special organoleptic characteristics.

Although the wine is already very pleasant the summer after the harvest, it is at its most enjoyable after a year in the bottles. If it is properly stored it will maintain its characteristics for several years.

Prizes: Guida ai Migliori Vini d'Italia 2007 (2007 Guide to Italian Best Wines): 12th out of 100. "... one of the best Italian white wines for this vintage."

Brilliant, golden-yellow color with straw-yellow nuances. Intense, clean, pleasing and refined aromas with initial hints of apple, plum and pear, which open into fuller aromas of hawthorn, lemon, pineapple, broom, peach and almond. To the palate it is agreeable and a confirmation of the nose: crisp in the mouth, with good body and intense flavor well-balanced by alcohol. The finish is persistent and reminiscent of apple, plum and pear.

It pairs well with seafood, pasta, risotto marinara (with vegetables and shellfish), cheese and egg dishes.
