The vineyards are located in the Novara Hills in the municipality of Romagnano Sesia. The soil is of glacial origin and the grapes used to produce Opera Prima come from the western part of the Ghemme Vineyard. The wine ages for 12 months in first-, second- and third-passage barriques.
The color is brilliant ruby red. The scent of cherries and plums opens into a sweet note of vanilla which surprises the nose then reveals a touch of liquorice and tobacco which add complexity to the mix. In the mouth it is rich and complex, with the little Merlot to add density, while the Nebbiolo guarantees persistence and long aftertaste.
It is advised to pair it with read meat, small game, sweet gorgonzola and herb cheeses. |

Made with select grapes from the higher vine of the Romagnano Sesia vineyards, in the Novara Hills, which are characterized by soil of glacial origin. The wine ages for 24 months in large 23- or 48-hectoliter French oak vats, plus 12 months in the bottle before release.
The color is brilliant garnet, with a ruby red heart and orange highlights on the nail. The perfume of ripe cherries opens to the aroma of green tobacco, notes of dried fruit and just a touch of black truffles. This wine is called 'Pilin' to honor the grandfather of the current family estate manager, Marco, as this was the nickname by which he was known in Gavi.
The best, healthiest and ripest bunches are carefully selected from all the farms vineyards and placed in wooden trays, where they are left to partially dry for 30 to 40 days. This makes the wine suitable for vinification and ageing in barriques.
It reaches maturity in its third year, and maintains an even level of quality for many years. The winery began making this wine back in 1984, since then its quality has stood out for itself.

The different compositions of the soil compared to the Gavi 'Fornaci', the age of the vines, types of clones, planting density and microclimate make this wine very different from the previous one. Comparative tasting clearly demonstrates how much terroir and vineyard work affects the wine.
Though the wine is very pleasant the summer after the harvest, it gets even better after a few months of refinement in the bottle, where it can be kept for several years without quality loss.

Despite high production costs and low yield, this wine is produced from an over 80-year-old vineyard with outstanding traditional and genetic heritage. In addition, the particular soil composition and the vineyard's microclimate created by the surrounding woodlands, give this Gavi 'Vignavecchia' (Old Vineyard) very special organoleptic characteristics.
Although the wine is already very pleasant the summer after the harvest, it is at its most enjoyable after a year in the bottles. If it is properly stored it will maintain its characteristics for several years.
Prizes: Guida ai Migliori Vini d'Italia 2007 (2007 Guide to Italian Best Wines): 12th out of 100. "... one of the best Italian white wines for this vintage."
Brilliant, golden-yellow color with straw-yellow nuances. Intense, clean, pleasing and refined aromas with initial hints of apple, plum and pear, which open into fuller aromas of hawthorn, lemon, pineapple, broom, peach and almond. To the palate it is agreeable and a confirmation of the nose: crisp in the mouth, with good body and intense flavor well-balanced by alcohol. The finish is persistent and reminiscent of apple, plum and pear.
It pairs well with seafood, pasta, risotto marinara (with vegetables and shellfish), cheese and egg dishes.
